Sexten stages charity weekend with Prince Albert of Monaco and international sports stars

Numerous international sports stars and top European celebrities took up the invitation from Prince Albert II of Monaco over the weekend, making their way to the South Tyrolean resort of Sexten in the Upper Puster Valley: and on Saturday, 28 March 2015, the tenth “World Stars Ski Event” culminated in spectacular fashion with a slalom race and a dramatic biathlon competition. The charity event kicked off on the Friday evening with an exclusive gala dinner. The “Star Team for Children”, founded in 1993 by Prince Albert and Mauro Serra, raised the commendable sum of 20,000 euros for children in need.

“It’s great to be here”

Everyone heeded the call from Prince Albert II of Monaco: with clear blue skies and excellent snow on the Marc Girardelli slope on the Kreuzberg mountain, the holiday resort of Sexten welcomed world-famous sports stars and international celebrities to the “World Stars Ski Event”. The Prince had invited them to join him in South Tyrol to take part in the “Star Team for Children” charity event, and he was clearly impressed by his stay there: “I feel wonderful, it’s great to be here.” As well as fun, charity was uppermost in the Prince’s mind: “Charity plays a major role in my life.”

The charity weekend kicked off with an exclusive gala dinner held in the renowned Bad Moos Sport & Spa Hotel on Friday, 27 March. Famous personalities such as the Regent of Monaco himself, former ski stars such as Christof Innerhofer, Marc Girardelli and Jure Kosir, Formula 1 legend Riccardo Patrese and retired top skier Denise Karbon spent the evening relaxing with numerous other Star Team participants and a who’s who of South Tyrol’s business and social roster. A raffle was also held, offering guests the chance to win personal items donated by the stars present.

Celebrities get down – on the Girardelli slope

The highlight of the weekend’s events was the sporting celebrity rendezvous: staged on the Marc Girardelli slope on the Kreuzberg mountain, it featured a friendly parallel slalom race and a biathlon competition. Celebrities and South Tyrolean children each formed a team. Fun and charity were the order of the day, even if one or two personalities took matters more seriously than others… The events were won by former South Tyrolean sports stars Camilla Alfieri (parallel slalom) and Johann Passler (biathlon).

Charity comes first

The “Star Team for Children” association, co-founded by Prince Albert and Mauro Serra, regularly raises funds for projects aimed at benefiting disadvantaged children. This year donations will be going to the “Ordre St. Lazare de Jerusalem Monaco”. Head of the Sexten Tourist Office, Dr Erwin Lanzinger, said: “A commendable 20,000 euros have now been raised and we are delighted to be able to support the “Star Team for Children” with this sum.”

He continued: “It is an honour for us that the Prince of Monaco has chosen Sexten for this winter charity event”. Looking back over the successful events of the past days, which also stimulated considerable interest in the media both in Italy and abroad, Dr Lanzinger said: “Everyone wants to be there when Prince Albert and his “Star Team” get together, whether on-the-spot live or via TV, radio or the press.” Sexten, with its stunning mountain backdrop of the Sextner Dolomites, was presented to an audience of millions in the best possible light – this charity event has allowed us to show off our claims as a leading holiday destination way beyond the borders of South Tyrol.”
