Elīna Garanča delights Kitzbühel

A wonderfully warm summer evening, a clear starlit sky and bright moonlight – open air concerts do not get more atmospheric that this. Elīna Garanča appeared at the weekend for the third time against the splendid backdrop of the Kitzbühel mountains, delighting nearly 3,000 fans together with her two American guests, soprano Angel Joy Blue and baritone Donnie Ray Albert. And this despite the fact that Garanča had suffered a serious vocal cord infection during concert rehearsals. Against the advice of her doctors, however, Garanča refused to miss the chance to sing at one of her – as she put it – most important concerts of the year. Artistic director Karel Mark Chichon adapted the programme to the new situation, stating: “Elīna sings what she and her voice feel they can manage”. The audience showed their thanks with resounding applause and standing ovations.

A varied programme with a “Grande Finale”

There was no shortage of big names on the programme: Berlioz, Saint-Saens, Leoncavallo, Verdi, Rossini, and finally a medley created by Chichon from well-known songs such as “Granada” and “Marechiare”, all provided for a wide range of classics that was especially rich in highlights. Of special interest was a premiere: the first performance by Elīna Garančas of the aria “Samson, recherchant ma presence” from “Samson et Dalila” by Camille Saint-Saens. As an encore all three stars sang the “Brindisi” from La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi.

Celebrities in attendance

Numerous celebrities were also seen enjoying the concert: the Mayor of Kitzbühel, Klaus Winkler; Deputy Mayor Sigfried Luxner; director of Kitzbühel Cableways Josef Burger; director of Leitner Ropeways Martin Leitner; geneticist Markus Hengstschläger; ex-head of Hugo Boss Werner Baldessarini; bestselling author Hera Lind; PR lady Uschi Ackermann; ski legend Michael Walchhofer; director of Tirol Werbung Josef Margreiter, plus Gerhard Walter and Manfred Hofer from Kitzbühel Tourismus. All enjoyed the wonderful voices against the evocative backdrop of the Kitzbühel Alps as well as the artistic reception after the concert.
